United 8 Arsenal 2

Whatever City can do, United can do better.

While the blue half of Manchester looked set to dominate the footballing agenda with a stunning 5-1 win at Spurs, United went goal crazy against a depleted Arsenal side to steal the headlines and hammer home a warning to Roberto Mancini's team and the rest of the Barclays Premier League.

In a game that had everything - a missed penalty, a converted spot-kick, a hat-trick for Wayne Rooney, a red card and 10 goals, United simply romped home 8-2.

Danny Welbeck, Ashley Young (2), Nani, Ji-sung Park also hit the net with David De Gea superbly saving a penalty when the lead was a slender one. Theo Walcott and Robin van Persie replied for the crestfallen Gunners, who had Carl Jenkinson sent off in the second half.

United made their intentions clear from the start with Welbeck charging down Wojciech Szczesny and looking a real threat. Tom Cleverley and Welbeck shot wide and some of the Reds' passing was mesmeric.

So it was no surprise when the hesitant visiting defence failed to deal with Anderson's clever lofted pass and Welbeck steered a looping header over Szczesny for the opener. Chris Smalling dragged wide after setting up the chance for himself beautifully but, against the run of play, Arsenal were awarded a penalty when Jonny Evans pulled at Walcott'sUnited 8 Arsenal 2

United v Arsenal

United face Arsenal at Old Trafford hoping to notch a North London double after the Spurs success...

Form guide
The current fortunes of United and the Gunners could not be more contrasting. Both clubs fielded teams with an average age of 23 last weekend but while the new-look Reds brushed aside Tottenham with a second-half blitz, Arsene Wenger’s inexperienced side (now without Cesc Fabregas and Samir Nasri) slipped to a 0-2 home defeat to Liverpool. Those results made it two wins from two for United with Arsenal already five points adrift, but the under-fire Londoners did at least enjoy a midweek boost by winning at Udinese to reach the Champions League group stage.

Ins and outs
Nemanja Vidic (calf) is out for four weeks, Rafael (shoulder) two months while Antonio Valencia (ankle) is not yet ready for a return. Given the form of the young centre-halves against Spurs (Jonny Evans and Phil Jones both impressing in the 3-0 win) the boss may give Rio Ferdinand longer to recover from his hamstring injury. Wenger’s men, meanwhile, have even more problems: Jack Wilshere (ankle) is ruled out, while Alex Song, Emmanuel Frimpong and Gervinho are all suspended.

Last meeting
One of Wenger’s few fit midfielders scored the only goal of the game the last time United and Arsenal met – back in April at the Emirates. Aaron Ramsey’s 56th-minute goal deflated the title-chasing Reds – at least on that day – but was not enough to hoist the Gunners back into the title race. They finished fourth, we made it 19.

Top man
Robin van Persie is not only the visitors’ main man but he’s now the captain, following the departure (eventually) of Cesc Fabregas to Barcelona. The Dutchman bagged 18 goals in 19 starts in

the latter half of last season, a run that set a new record of scoring in nine consecutive away games, and opened his account for this season in Arsenal’s midweek Champions League qualifier.

Quote/unquote
“They may have been unsettled because Fabregas played there for many years, controlling the midfield, and Nasri was very important for them last year. I think the speculation will affect them a bit. But teams make a lot of changes, buy new players and you never know how players will be.” – Nani

Any sub-plots?
We’ve been told constantly for the past few seasons that Arsenal’s young side will come good and they’ve been roundly praised for their slick, one-touch, attacking football. Yet on the evidence of the season so far, it’s Sir Alex’s young charges that are the team with real promise and the ones truly worth watching. If that’s not enough to make Wenger wince, then watching the impressive Chris Smalling and Phil Jones against his side – both having opted for Old Trafford over the Emirates – surely will.

Whistle-blower
Sunday’s match will be refereed by Howard Webb, who took charge of this fixture last season, plus United’s home games against Chelsea and Liverpool (twice). Widely regarded as the country’s best ref.

Fletch could face Gunners

Sir Alex Ferguson has confirmed that Darren Fletcher is ready to make a return to senior duties, and will be considered for Sunday's squad to face Arsenal.

The Scottish midfielder emerged unscathed from Thursday evening's Reserves victory over Swansea, and the Boss told his pre-match press conference that Fletcher is ready for his first senior outing of the season.

"On the injury front, Darren Fletcher played a game last night which is great news," he said. "I think the boy is back now. He’s had a terrible time but now he’s looking terrific and he’ll be in the squad for Sunday."

In other injury news, Sir Alex confirmed that Rio Ferdinand and Antonio Valencia are 'training well', while Nemanja Vidic is out for a month and Rafael will miss even longer with his dislocated shoulder.

Despite those ongoing absentees, the Boss declared his side 'in healthy shape', and revealed that Chicharito - fresh from his substitute outing against Spurs - is fit to start, even though the form of Danny Welbeck presents 'a problem' in selecting Wayne Rooney's strike partner.

"Chicharito came back on Monday which gives me a tremendous problem for picking a side," said Sir Alex. "But that’s the kind of problem we want."

United 3 Spurs 0

There's no substitute for experience, although energy and enthusiasm are going a long way at Old Trafford at the moment.

Sir Alex may not be able to call on the likes of Edwin van der Sar, Paul Scholes or Gary Neville anymore, but in the place of cool heads the boss now has pace, power and, judging by this performance, no small amount of panache.

Against Tottenham Hotspur at Old Trafford on Monday night, United's kids – we can call them that: the side Sir Alex sent out was the second youngest he's ever fielded in the Premier League – ruled the roost and goals from Danny Welbeck, Anderson and Wayne Rooney handed the Reds a victory built as much on vim and vigour as patient passing or tough tackling.

There was also beauty. Anderson's goal was pure pleasure, a simple finish after a crisp passing move and a cheeky backheel by Welbeck tore open the Tottenham defence to leave space for the Brazilian to blaze through the middle. That came sandwiched between two headers: Welbeck's opener and Rooney's second goal of the season, three minutes from time.

But while United were certainly brilliant at times, Tottenham were in this game for long periods – scores were level until 61 minutes – and played a pivotal role in an entertaining, end-to-end affair. The Reds started brightest, though, creating a pair of half-chances inside

two minutes, before Tom Cleverley's low side-footed effort drew a fantastic finger-tip save from Brad Friedel as United ramped up the early pressure.

Spurs gradually gained a foothold, although failed to test David De Gea on his competitive home debut until the 21st minute when Gareth Bale's tame shot was fielded easily by the Spaniard down by his near post.

At the other end, Nani's pace and trickery was causing plenty of problems for both Spurs full-backs and Young went close with a clever looping header just before the half-hour mark. De Gea's next examinations came when Nico Kranjcar and then Rafael van der Vaart blasted efforts at goal from the edge of the area. He passed with flying colours, on both occasions showing strong, safe hands. Just as impressive was the Spaniard's composure with the ball at his feet. On numerous occasions, with Tottenham forwards bearing down on him at speed, he kept his cool and picked out red shirts with accurate Edwin-esque distribution.

Despite both sides playing entertaining football at a good tempo and regularly swapping possession (MU 48% TH 52%) and goal attempts (MU 7 TH 8) in the first 45 minutes, the match remained scoreless as the teams trotted down the tunnel.

Friedel, diving down to his right, denied Young shortly after the interval before making an equally impressive double-save to keep out left-footed efforts from Anderson and Rooney.

But there was nothing the big American could do about Welbeck's opener as the young forward rose high and glanced Cleverley's curling right-wing cross into the corner of the net from six yards. Danny hadn't set the game alight until then, but he took his chance when it mattered and proved why Sir Alex has shown so much faith in him at the beginning of this season.

Rooney, who had imposed himself more and more after the break, then went close with a curling free-kick from the angle of the penalty area that Friedel just managed to claw away, before Welbeck's acrobatic overhead kick nestled safely in the experienced goalkeeper's arms.

United were hungry for more and duly doubled the advantage when Anderson scored an early contender for goal of the season when he side-footed home from 12 yards to round off a delightful passing move.

Rooney's close-range header, after Jermaine Defoe had blasted against the post at the other end - then added a bit of polish to the scoreline, with Giggs, sent on as a late substitute, providing the assist with a pinpoint cross from the edge of the area. It was almost as if Ryan was proving there's still room for experience amongst this exciting new crop of talent. For now, though, the youngsters deserve all the plaudits.

United v Tottenham

United host Tottenham in the first Old Trafford match of the 2011/12 season...

Form guide
United began the new Barclays Premier League season with a gritty 2-1 win over West Brom at The Hawthorns, a promising sign for the Reds considering Sir Alex Ferguson’s side only picked up five away wins last season. Tottenham, meanwhile, are yet to start their domestic campaign after last weekend’s opener with Everton was postponed because of the London riots. Spurs were in action on Thursday, however, and showed no signs of rustiness in a 5-0 win over Hearts in their Europa League play-off first leg.

Ins and outs
The United medical team is surprisingly busy at the minute, with up to six first-team players either suffering, or recovering from knocks. Defenders Rio Ferdinand (hamstring) and Nemanja Vidic (calf) were both injured against the Baggies and are unavailable, as is Rafael (shoulder), Darren Fletcher (virus), Antonio Valencia (ankle) and Javier Hernandez (concussion). As a result, youngsters Chris Smalling, Jonny Evans and Phil Jones are all set to deputise at the back against Spurs, who are similarly struggling with injuries. Harry Redknapp could be without want-away Luka Modric, Tom Huddlestone, Steven Pienaar, Jermaine Jenas and William Gallas.

Last meeting
Tottenham boss Redknapp had challenged his side to lay down a significant marker in the title-race by beating United at White Hart Lane in January, though he did not get the result he craved. The match produced a tightly-fought 0-0 draw, a result that extended the Reds' unbeaten league run to 21 games.

Top man

Gareth Bale wins the awards, Rafael van der Vaart scores the goals and Peter Crouch does the

dancing; but there’s no mistaking which player makes Tottenham tick. Modric, the diminutive Croatian playmaker and architect of attack at White Hart Lane, has been ever-present in the Spurs midfield since signing from Dinamo Zagreb in 2007 and is a world-class talent. Although a doubt for Monday’s match, Modric is definitely a man to watch.

Quote/unquote
“Tottenham are a good team who like to play football the right way and they have the ability to beat anybody in the league. Last season, they were very strong and had some good results, particularly in the Champions League. Obviously there’s been a bit of uncertainty around a few players this summer, but whatever happens they still have good players and I think they’ll do well.” – Nemanja Vidic

Any sub-plots?
What is it with questionable goals (or non-goals) between United and Tottenham at Old Trafford? In last season’s corresponding fixture, Nani somewhat controversially scored past Heurelho Gomes after the referee had appeared to halt play – it turns out he hadn’t and the goal stood – much to the dismay of Spurs. Years earlier, Pedro Mendes saw his ‘goal that never was’ denied by a linesman, who deemed the ball hadn’t crossed the line. Could lightning strike thrice on Monday?

Whistle-blower
Monday’s match will be refereed by Lee Probert, who took charge of several United matches last season, including the Reds' 7-1 drubbing of Blackburn Rovers.

Rivals watch
Arsenal host Liverpool in one of two midday kick-offs on Saturday, while Chelsea welcome West Brom to Stamford Bridge at teatime. Manchester City make the short journey to Bolton on Sunday.

Boss pins faith in youth

Sir Alex will again place his trust in youth when Tottenham travel to Old Trafford on Monday night.

The boss was pleased with the display in the 2-1 win at West Brom with the likes of Tom Cleverley and Danny Welbeck grasping their opportunity. With Nemanja Vidic and Rio Ferdinand injured, there will also be an unfamiliar look to the defence with Phil Jones, Jonny Evans and Chris Smalling set to start.

"The team on Monday will be a very young defensive line-up, with Jones and Evans in the centre and Smalling at right-back," revealed the manager. "But Patrice Evra will be back for Spurs, which gives us experience.

"David De Gea will learn from the experience of the games he's had so far. We'll also have Cleverley and Welbeck. So it's a very young team at the moment, but it's a team full of energy and it's a team of great ability. I'm enjoying watching them at the moment.

"I'm not worried about the young players filling in at the back. Evans has ample experience, of course, and has been at the club since he was 12 years old. He's played plenty of first-team games.

"Phil Jones has the experience of playing for Blackburn last season in the Barclays Premier League and I thought he and Chris Smalling were the stars for England Under-21s in the summer. Chris had a fantastic first season and he's continued his progress this year.

"So I have no issues whatsoever with playing those guys. We brought in Phil Jones at 19, David De Gea at 20 and Ashley Young at 25. We're happy with the age of the squad."
